A magnificent piece of history.

Expertly and finely hand carved from Bog Oak, this historic 1860s to 1890s era brooch holds a cord and floral bouquet wreath.

Bog oak wood was preserved in peat bogs for thousands of years. The preserved wood was protected from decay by the low-oxygen, acidic conditions of the bog, whilst the peat tannins stained the bog oak dark brown to nearly black. The ancient, partially fossilised wood is hard and durable, perfect for carving into jewellery and other objects. This material was a popular choice during the Victorian era for mourning jewellery.

This magnificent Bog Oak brooch was sourced in a busy Lisbon, Portuguese antique shop and I wish I could hear a little of its past life!

Dimensions: 55mm high x 47mm wide.
