An exquisite and well working historic, early South African sovereign coin case that is hallmarked for Birmingham circa 1890.

This sterling silver Sovereign Chatelaine coin case pendant is detailed as an awards token, hand engraved with the script “Natal Gov’t Cup won by Durban Light Inf’y 1895” with the reverse engraved with “Corp’l W. Coles. 73” . 

The year 1895 was a highly significant milestone for the Durban Light Infantry regiment, as it was the year that the unit officially separated and reassumed its independent title as the Durban Light Infantry.

This all silver coin case is in very good antique, Victorian era condition, with the spring clasp to open and close the cover working well.
