This rare and delightful object of virtue is a hand carved, hand sculpted Brazilian wooden figa fist.
It is charmingly detailed with 900 silver fingernails, a wrist chain bracelet and a silver footing decorated with lucky four leaf clovers.
Steeped with symbolism and detailing, the figa fist is a historic Roman (Etruscan) symbol. During the colonial era, the symbol arrived in South America and merged deeply with Afro-Brazilian traditions, becaming a good-luck amulet against jealousy and negative energy. It holds relevance of protection, fertility and life, defiance and feminine energy.
This mid century, hand carved wooden sculpture is a well sized figa of 12.5cm high x 4.9cm wide.
It is in good vintage condition and the silver base is clearly marked 900 silver.
